To the editor: My husband and I have been gratified and thrilled to see the story within the June 2 version that featured a scholar who’s a part of my undergraduate college’s Guardian Students Program (“Former foster youth face low odds of college or job success. Some are trying to change that,” June 1). We’ve got supported this program with scholarships and mentoring for a number of years, and have seen our scholarship recipients transfer on to nice careers and graduate faculties. The share of foster youth who make it to varsity is already so small that those that do deserve our help and encouragement.

Thanks once more for printing a narrative about this essential program. We’re blissful that Sacramento State President Luke Wooden, who, because the story talked about, was himself a foster youngster, offers this program further visibility and help on and off campus.

    Margot Shinnamon Bach, Sacramento
