The US Geological Survey says the epicentre was within the Atlas Mountains, some 70 kilometres (43 miles) southwest of Marrakesh.
The quake was additionally felt as far-off because the coastal cities of Rabat, Casablanca and Essaouira.
Marrakesh is the closest main metropolis to the epicentre of the quake.
