To the editor: Gustavo Arellano extols the virtues of a rustic that truly had 37 candidates assassinated this election cycle, a wonderful nation that many Californians is not going to even drive into for concern of violence. (“What Mexico’s historic presidential election can teach the U.S.,” column, June 4)
Claudia Sheinbaum, the hand-selected candidate of the outgoing president, gained in Mexico. Good for her. Really.
However as a result of some kooks right here in our nation crammed him “with dread” as he voted (with out getting killed), right here’s a query for Arellano: Of the numerous hundreds of immigrants who handed by way of Mexico to get to this land, what number of of them stated, “Hey, let’s simply keep right here in Mexico”?

To the editor: I get pleasure from Arellano’s columns, together with his piece lauding Mexico for electing its first feminine president.
However wow, what a special interpretation he has of “poor Mexico,” the phrase attributed to the Mexican dictator Porfirio Díaz.
I all the time thought the purpose of the total comment — “Poor Mexico: So removed from God, so near the USA” — was that Mexico was each removed from God’s assist and near a bullying, smug neighbor to the north. Really, Arellano’s column type of lends itself to that view.
I congratulate the Mexican individuals for his or her progressive perspective towards gender equality within the presidential election. Perhaps sometime that would occur right here.
