On Could 10, 2022, NASA launched a suborbital rocket into the ambiance from the Ny-Alesund launch website in Svalbard, Norway. Named Endurance, for the ill-fated ship that carried the Anglo-Irish Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) on his well-known 1914-1917 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, the rocket analyzed the ambiance between 250 and 768 kilometres above the Earth’s floor, to measure Earth’s world electrical potential — i.e., how a lot such an electrical discipline, if it existed, would “tug” at electrically-charged ions in our planet’s polar ambiance.
