The port metropolis of Derna seems to be hardest hit.
Two dams in a valley above the Mediterranean metropolis had been overwhelmed when Storm Daniel introduced the heaviest rainfall in a single day for 40 years.
That despatched an enormous wave of water by means of town within the early hours of Monday.
House blocks that stood nicely again from the river partially collapsed into the mud, whereas a bridge alongside the seafront was washed away.
