Colorado has an abundance of mountains named after well-known males – suppose Lengthy’s Peak, Mount Wilson, or Pikes Peak.
Since childhood, Sarah Hahn Campbell has been fascinated by the folks behind place names. However she found little to no info on peaks, lakes or trails named after girls.
So, in 2017, the Denver-based creator and highschool instructor set out to research the mysterious girls behind the names of a few of Colorado’s landmarks.
That culminated in Sarah’s new e-book, Her Place on the Map: 18 Women and the Colorado Wonders Named for Them. It’s half path information and half historical past lesson, exploring 18 Colorado trails, mountains and lakes, whereas highlighting the tales of the ladies for whom these locations have been named.
Sarah spoke with Erin O’Toole in Might about her e-book, and the way difficult it was to find out about the actual girls behind the names. To have fun Colorado Day, which marks the day 149 years in the past that Colorado grew to become a state, we’re listening again to that dialog.
