Creator Joel Burcat will signal copies of his ebook, “Whiz Child,” from 1:30 to three:30 p.m., Thursday, July 24, at Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Seashore.
The richly woven novel set in 1950 Philadelphia delivers a compelling story of ambition, identification, love and resilience. Ben Inexperienced, a younger Jewish Navy veteran and aspiring novelist, finds himself at a crossroads as he navigates the tensions between postwar American optimism and the cruel realities of prejudice, household obligations and private goals.
David Burcat, Joel’s father, was a Navy corpsman in World Battle II. After David died in 1998, Joel’s mom gave him the papers from his dad’s College of Pennsylvania days within the early Nineteen Fifties. Amongst them was a 16-page typewritten manuscript.
“I learn it, beloved it and tucked it away, realizing I’d return to it sometime,” stated Burcat. “A decade later, I constructed ‘Whiz Child’ round his story.”
