Though the church bombing is central to the plot of the novel, this “is the story of a household,” says Curtis, who makes use of the juxtaposition to make his level. “It isn’t a narrative, per se, concerning the civil rights motion or about hatred, – it is a story of a household and a bunch of youngsters’s response to an occasion that they do not perceive.”
