ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka hopes to carry 16,000 acres into coconut cultivation throughout Jaffna, Mullaitivu, and Mannar with its new northern coconut triangle mission, the president’s media division stated.
Coinciding with World Coconut Day, President Anura Dissanayake launched the Kapthuru Saviya northern coconut triangle mission this morning in Puthukudiyiruppu.
The mission, which begins with the target of cultivating 16,000 acres of coconut within the Northern Province by 2025, is predicted to broaden to 50,000 acres by 2027.
The programme is predicted to spice up nationwide output, carry productiveness from 2.7 billion nuts in 2024 to 2.9 billion in 2025, and attain 4.2 billion by 2030, the Ceylon Chamber of Coconut Industries (CCCI) stated.
Coconut-based SMEs within the North and East can be developed, and yields elevated by 10-15 % yearly, CCCI stated, “to realize Sri Lanka’s 2030 export goal of USD 2.5 billion.”
The Kapruka Saviya programme may also introduces trendy market instruments to future-proof the sector, CCCI stated.
By partnerships with the United Nations Industrial Improvement Group (UNIDO) and Regen Agri, farmers will achieve entry to regenerative agriculture methods.
“These initiatives will assist strengthen compliance, enhance productiveness, and open pathways to premium markets.”
The geo-identification of merchandise can be deliberate. “By creating GI-based certification for Sri Lankan coconut merchandise, exporters will have the ability to calculate stronger market formulae, safe worldwide recognition, and carve out a premium place for Sri Lankan coconut on the worldwide stage.”
