Senegal’s President Macky Sall has declared he won’t run for a 3rd time period in subsequent 12 months’s election, ending years of uncertainty over his political future that helped gasoline lethal opposition protests final month.
In a speech carried dwell on his official Fb web page, Sall maintained on Monday that Senegal’s structure would have allowed his candidacy regardless of having already been elected to a second time period in 2019.
“There was a lot hypothesis and commentary on my eventual candidature on this election,” Sall stated in his speech. “The 2019 time period was my second and final time period.”
“My determination, fastidiously thought-about… is to not run as a candidate within the upcoming election on February 25, 2024… though the structure grants me the precise,” he stated.
Sall’s announcement will doubtless quell fears of a democratic backslide in Senegal.
