Yearly, tens of millions of Hindus provide prayers to the solar whereas standing in water through the Chhath competition.

However for devotees in and round India’s capital, Delhi, the ritual is commonly tinged with concern: the Yamuna river, the place they pray, is closely polluted with industrial waste and untreated sewage.

For years, governments on the state and federal stage have promised to repair the issue, however activists allege that progress is just too gradual. The BBC has emailed inquiries to representatives of Delhi’s water board and air pollution management board.

Whereas political events take pot-shots at one another over the problem, the BBC’s Anshul Verma spoke to devotees who attended this 12 months’s rituals on 31 October.

“We’re scared – however what selection do we’ve?” considered one of them says.
