The Police in Ondo State have arrested a 29-year-old man, Bello Azeez, for allegedly faking his personal abduction in an try to extort ₦500,000 from his dad and mom and mates.
Mr. Azeez, a local of Ipele in Owo Native Authorities Space, initially requested monetary help from his father to settle a debt. Following the denial of his request, he devised a plan to stage his personal kidnapping.
On August 11, Azeez pretended to journey to Ibadan and started making misery calls to his household and mates, claiming he had been kidnapped.
Involved kin launched a GoFundMe marketing campaign and, together with different contributions, efficiently raised ₦500,000 for his supposed ransom.
Nevertheless, Azeez’s directive for the cash to be paid immediately into his private checking account raised suspicions amongst his relations.
This prompted them to alert the police, who traced his telephone and found he had remained in Owo all through his supposed captivity. He was subsequently arrested and confessed to the crime.
Police spokesperson DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola acknowledged that the suspect might be charged in courtroom upon completion of the investigation.
