Philodemus (born c. 110 bc, Gadara, Syria—died c. 35 bc, Herculaneum, Campania) was a Greek poet and Epicurean thinker who did a lot to unfold Epicureanism to Rome.
After learning underneath the Epicurean Zeno of Sidon at Athens, he moved to Rome c. 75 bc and have become the mentor of the Roman aristocrat Lucius Calpurnius Piso, who invited Philodemus to dwell in his villa at Herculaneum, close to Naples. Within the ruins of that villa had been discovered fragments of Philodemus’ writings. He was recognized for his concept of artwork, which contradicted classical doctrines of aesthetics. His fame rests largely, nonetheless, on his love epigrams within the Palatine Anthology, allusions to that are present in works by the later Roman poets Virgil, Ovid, and Horace.
