    When Johan Helberg stated he needed a waterfront view, he did not count on the waterfront to come back to him full with a 443-foot cargo ship.

    Helberg awoke on Thursday to find the huge bow of the NCL Salten resting a stone’s throw from his residence in Byneset, Norway, close to Trondheim. 

    The vessel had run aground within the early hours, narrowly lacking Helberg’s home by roughly 16 ft.

    Remarkably, Helberg stated he slept through the entire incident. He was solely alerted to his surprising customer when a involved neighbor rang his doorbell. 

    “I went to the window and was fairly astonished to see a giant ship,” Helberg advised The Guardian newspaper. “I needed to bend my neck to see the highest of it. It was so unreal.”

    Authorities have decided that the ship’s watch officer, a Ukrainian national in his 30s, fell asleep whereas on responsibility, resulting in the vessel veering off beam.

    The officer has been charged with negligent navigation. No accidents or oil spills had been reported, however the incident did trigger minor harm to a heating pump’s wire on Helberg’s property.

    And this is not NCL Salten’s first grounding. The ship beforehand ran aground in 2023, however managed to free itself with out help.

    Efforts to refloat the ship throughout excessive tide on Thursday had been unsuccessful.

    The Norwegian Coastal Administration is conducting geotechnical assessments earlier than making one other try. Delivery firm NCL has said it’s cooperating with the investigation.

    As for Helberg, he stays in good spirits regardless of the surprising intrusion. 

    “It is a very cumbersome new neighbor, however it would quickly go away,” he quipped.
