Niger’s army leaders have launched greater than 50 detainees, together with former ministers within the authorities they toppled in 2023.
Amongst them are the previous ministers of defence, oil and finance, in addition to a number of senior military officers, convicted or accused of plotting earlier coups.
Ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, who has been underneath home arrest because the 2023 army takeover, was not on the listing of these launched regardless of worldwide requires him to be freed.
When the BBC requested about President Bazoum’s continued detention, Justice Minister Aliyou Daouda cited “nationwide safety and sovereignty” issues.
“The query of his launch is an inner matter in Niger and solely issues Niger,” Justice Minister Aliyou Daouda advised the BBC.
Bazoum is accused of undermining nationwide safety and excessive treason.
The discharge of the others is among the many suggestions of a nationwide convention held in February, together with extending the rule of Basic Abdourahamane Tiani by 5 years.
The freed ministers and officers have been arrested after the July 2023 coup which introduced Basic Tchiani to energy, and had been held for alleged conspiracy to undermine state safety and authority.
