A company manslaughter investigation has been opened into failings that led to lots of of infants dying or being injured at maternity items in Nottingham.

Nottinghamshire Police mentioned it was inspecting whether or not maternity care offered by the Nottingham College Hospitals (NUH) NHS belief had been grossly negligent.

The belief is on the centre of the biggest maternity inquiry within the historical past of the NHS, with about 2,500 instances of neonatal deaths, stillbirths and hurt to moms and infants being examined by independent midwife Donna Ockenden.

The police investigation will centre on two maternity items overseen by the belief, which runs the Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham Metropolis Hospital.

NUH mentioned it was “deeply sorry for the ache and struggling brought about”, and it was “completely proper” that accountability was taken.

In a press release on the pressure’s web site, Det Supt Matthew Croome, from the investigation crew, mentioned company manslaughter was a “severe legal offence”.

He mentioned: “The offence pertains to circumstances the place an organisation has been grossly negligent within the administration of its actions, which has then led to an individual’s loss of life.

“In such an investigation we wish to see if the general accountability lies with the organisation somewhat than particular people and my investigation will look to determine if there’s proof that the Nottingham College Hospitals NHS Belief has dedicated this offence.”

The pressure mentioned its investigation into deaths and severe accidents associated to NUH’s maternity care – known as Operation Perth – had seen greater than 200 household instances referred to it thus far.

The announcement comes 4 months after the belief was fined £1.6m for “avoidable failings” linked to the deaths of three infants in 2021.

Campaigners Dr Jack and Sarah Hawkins, mother and father of Harriet who was stillborn in 2016, mentioned the event was “one piece of the jigsaw in direction of accountability”.

They added: “Harriet needs to be 9 years previous. Our lives had been fully destroyed by the unimaginable and repeated trauma by the hands of NUH.

“A prosecution for company manslaughter will solely penalise the belief, not the people accountable, a lot of whom are nonetheless working as we speak.

“We mustn’t ever lose sight of particular person accountability for individuals who so cruelly stole not simply our daughter’s life and voice, however many others.”

A joint assertion from the hospital belief’s chair Nick Carver and its chief govt Anthony Could mentioned: “Since becoming a member of the board, we have now emphasised the significance of openness, transparency and accountability in our management and decision-making. We recognise that there’s extra to do.

“We’re totally dedicated to the continuing police investigation and the Unbiased Assessment of Maternity Providers, led by Donna Ockenden.

“We want to reassure the general public that we’re decided to enhance our maternity companies.

“We all know how necessary the police investigation and unbiased assessment are for the affected households, the belief and our native communities. We hope that affected households obtain the solutions that they deserve.”
