    Lyceum students explore ancient political life at the American College of Greece

    In Might, 9 Lyceum college students traveled to Athens, Greece, alongside two Lyceum college members, for a three-week examine overseas program analyzing the classical understanding of historic Greek political life. As a part of the Lyceum Abroad Program, college students participated in a seminar-style course hosted by The American Faculty of Greece (ACG), exploring timeless political questions via the lens of historic Greek literature and philosophy.

    This 12 months marked a brand new chapter for the Lyceum Overseas Program: for the primary time, it partnered with Clemson College’s Pam Hendrix Middle for Schooling Overseas to offer Political Science credit score for collaborating college students.

    The course, taught by Lyceum Professor Spencer Krauss, centered on the classical understanding of political life. College students engaged with texts by Homer, Thucydides, Aristophanes, Sophocles and Plato, asking questions of putting up with significance:

    • What’s the floor of professional authority?
    • How does human advantage present itself on the political stage?
    • Is there a science of rule, and if that’s the case, what are its rules?
    • Why do people search to rule over each other?

    Along with seminar discussions, college students heard visitor lectures from esteemed ACG college. Jay Samons offered insights into the Persian Wars, Haris Vlavianos supplied his perspective on fashionable Greek identification and politics and Tobias Myers led a category on Homer’s Iliad.

    Each day seminars have been paired with archaeological website visits designed to complement the readings. These included the Acropolis and Parthenon, the ruins of the Agora and Pnyx, the oracle at Delphi, the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, and quite a few cities throughout the Peloponnese together with Mycenae, Olympia, Nafplion, Corinth and the traditional theater at Epidaurus. College students additionally explored a number of main museums in Athens, together with the Nationwide Archaeological Museum, the Benaki Museum, the Acropolis Museum, and the Museum of Cycladic Artwork.

    Reflecting on her expertise overseas, Lyceum Fellow Madi Axson stated, “My journey with Lyceum Overseas opened my eyes to the world round me, and uncovered me to new cultures, new pals, and helped me be taught extra about myself. This journey enabled me to have the privilege to stroll the identical paths because the philosophers we examine within the Lyceum Program, in addition to assist me decide what paths I could be interested by pursuing sooner or later.
