Dutch King Willem-Alexander has formally apologised for the Netherlands’ involvement in slavery, saying he felt “personally and intensely” affected.
The king was talking at a ceremony on Saturday marking the a hundred and sixtieth anniversary of the authorized abolition of slavery within the Netherlands, together with its former colonies within the Caribbean.
“I’m standing right here in entrance of you as your king and as a part of the federal government. At this time I’m apologising myself,” Willem-Alexander stated. “On at the present time we keep in mind the Dutch historical past of slavery, I ask forgiveness for this crime towards humanity.”
He stated racism in Dutch society stays an issue and never everybody would help his apology.
