To the editor: Sports activities (soccer specifically) is just not particular in instructing younger individuals the right way to work in teams, the right way to get together with others or the right way to respect the principles. (“Football isn’t just violence. It’s democracy’s schoolhouse,” Opinion, Dec. 22)
Debate groups, drama golf equipment, chess golf equipment, science golf equipment, robotics golf equipment and lots of different group actions train the identical issues. The large distinction? None of these actions depends on any sort of violence.
The lionization of soccer is a tragic commentary on the USA. Maybe op-ed article authors Frederick J. Ryan Jr. and James Washington haven’t examine why soccer turned such an enormous deal. Merely put, it perpetuated white supremacy, violence and faith (historically, soccer groups pray earlier than video games for victory, as if the divine cares who wins) at a time when American exceptionalism was inextricably tied to those values.
The U.S. and the world won’t lose democracy if individuals cease enjoying soccer. There are many different youth-oriented actions that do a much better job serving because the “schoolhouse” of democracy.

To the editor: The piece on soccer is the most effective I’ve learn in The Occasions just lately. The writers put all of it on the road, saying we’d like sports activities just like the blood in our veins — to compete and provides it our all in a managed atmosphere.
My grandson performed Pop Warner youth soccer for his first time this season. The expertise modified him and made him see the values of group play and arduous work. It introduced tears of pleasure to my eyes each time I watched him and his group play. And, his coaches are a number of the most wonderful individuals I’ve ever met.
