Burundi goes to the polls this Thursday to elect MPs and native councillors. However the election has already been closely criticised, with many candidates disqualified by the electoral fee – together with longtime opposition determine Agathon Rwasa. Burundi can also be affected by the battle in neighbouring DR Congo. Greater than 71,000 Congolese nationals have fled the preventing between the Congolese military and the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels since January. Many have crossed into Burundi, making this the biggest refugee inflow the nation has seen in many years. The chaos of warfare has torn households aside, as our regional correspondent studies.
