The sensation of understanding she was going to win her first ever monitor race as she handed everybody – ladies and boys – on the ultimate lap. Listening as her mum was instructed that 800m in two minutes and 39 seconds was “fairly good” for a 10-year-old.
All of it stays vivid, greater than 20 years later, as Britain’s Olympic 1500m bronze medallist weighs up the potential for finishing a full-circle second in pursuit of one other international podium.
The dilemma over whether or not to stay with the 1500m, change focus to the 800m, and even try a uncommon double, continues to occupy her thoughts simply 4 weeks earlier than the World Championships start in Tokyo.
