MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – There’s a rising push for civility at a time of intense political division following the latest killing of Charlie Kirk, a capturing at an ICE facility, and the specter of a authorities shutdown. It has many Vermont politicians — and voters — reflecting on the divisive discourse roiling the nation.
Congresswoman Becca Balint and Senator Peter Welch have been flanked by a personal safety element throughout a ribbon-cutting this week for brand spanking new inexpensive housing.
Ballint says it’s in response to political violence and threats rattling lawmakers on each side of the aisle, and that ongoing rhetoric from President Donald Trump is fueling the division. “The president has the power immediately, proper now, to take to the airwaves proper now and say ‘It’s time to cease the political violence,’” Balint stated.
The president blames left-leaning People for frightening political violence.
