Belgian champion Tim Wellens claimed his first Tour de France stage victory with a breakaway win on stage 15.
The UAE Workforce Emirates-XRG rider has achieved plenty of work for race chief Tadej Pogacar within the opening two weeks of the Tour however, free of his domestique duties for the day, attacked on the ultimate climb of the hilly 169.3km journey from Muret to Carcassonne.
The 34-year-old finally received by one minute 28 seconds, with fellow Belgian Victor Campenaerts ending second and Julian Alaphilippe third.
Wellens’ team-mate Tadej Pogacar crossed six minutes later within the peloton to take care of his lead of 4 minutes 13 seconds over Jonas Vingegaard within the basic classification standings.
