    Two folks died and greater than a dozen had been damage when a Mexican navy coaching ship hit the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday in New York Metropolis, officers stated. 

    In a news conference, New York Metropolis Mayor Eric Adams stated 277 had been on board the vessel crusing the East River when it collided with the bridge simply earlier than 8:30 p.m. Jap Time. Adams stated 4 folks suffered critical accidents. He later announced two of them died.

    “Nobody fell into the water, they had been all damage contained in the ship,” NYPD Particular Operations Chief Wilson Aramboles stated. “…The ship, from what I used to be knowledgeable by the supervisors of the ship, it was disembarking and going to Iceland.”

    The Mexican navy stated in a post on X that the Cuauhtemoc was broken throughout a crusing maneuver. Movies posted on-line confirmed the ship’s mast hitting the bridge and breaking up.   

    “I assume it was, the pilot that’s assigned to navigate, you already know, the boat out of the water, I consider there was some mechanical points that most likely brought about the ship to hit the water,” Aramboles stated. 

    Witnesses reported listening to a loud crunch adopted by screams. 

    “The entire sudden we heard tons of screaming coming from this huge crowd that was right here,” Torrey Leonard stated. “Our hearts had been skipping a beat as a result of it was simply horrible, the way it sounded. We heard like this wooden crunch. We then stood up from dinner proper right here and regarded on the bridge and we noticed what everyone’s already seen occur. Which was simply horrifying.” 

    Adams stated in a social media submit the Cuauhtemoc lost power earlier than it crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge.

    Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, Mexican ambassador to the U.S., advised reporters the ship has been crusing for about 20 years and was headed from Cozumel, Mexico, to Iceland.

    Police urged folks to keep away from the realm across the bridge, together with the South Avenue Seaport in Manhattan and DUMBO in Brooklyn. The bridge had been quickly shut right down to site visitors, however has since reopened.
