For years, local weather activists have centered their work round stopping a number of the world’s greatest polluters — from fossil gasoline corporations, to the meat business, to industrial farming. And whereas they continue to be a number of the greatest contributors to the local weather disaster, there’s a lesser recognized local weather wrongdoer that’s usually forgotten: the army.
Consultants have identified that the US Division of Protection is the world’s single largest greenhouse fuel emitter, with the US army known as “one of many largest local weather polluters in historical past.” In actual fact, analysis means that if the entire world’s militaries have been a rustic they’d be the fourth largest emitter throughout the globe.
And past the emissions from humvees, warplanes, and tanks, trendy warfare has a devastating impact on the planet. From bombing campaigns to drone strikes, warfare releases greenhouse fuel emissions, compromises geodiversity, and might trigger soil and air contamination.
On this episode of The Stream, we’ll have a look at the dimensions of army emissions, and whether or not a much less militaristic society is just not solely good for individuals, but in addition for the planet.
