The Anthropologists, a New York Metropolis-based, female-led, investigative theater firm, will current its devised play, “axes, herbs and satchels,” at Wabash School Nice Arts Middle on March 5. The efficiency will happen at 7:30 p.m. within the Ball Theater.
The Anthropologists’ Inventive Director Melissa Moschitto and co-director Sandie Luna helm the ensemble of Black girls and non-binary artists who shine a lightweight on the suppressed historical past of Black midwives, doulas and birthing our bodies. “axes, herbs and satchels” travels throughout generations with storytelling, motion, southern spirituals and ritual. The play is an act of reparative historical past, providing audiences an area for studying, reckoning and therapeutic.
“axes, herbs and satchels” was developed by way of intensive ethnographic analysis, major sources and private accounts to create a brand new investigative theater piece which celebrates the normal data held within the Black start employee neighborhood and examines maternal mortality.
The analysis and improvement of this play was supported partially by a partnership with the American Anthropological Affiliation, who established the primary anthropologist-in-residence with the corporate.
