Mohamed Muizzu has gained the presidential election within the Maldives after a second-round run-off in opposition to incumbent Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, which was seen as a check of the Indian Ocean archipelago’s nascent democracy in addition to its ties with China and conventional benefactor India.
Muizzu, 45, leads a celebration that welcomed an inflow of Chinese language loans and oversaw a wide-ranging crackdown on dissent when it was final in energy.
