At the least 78 folks have died and plenty of extra are feared lacking after a fishing boat carrying refugees and migrants capsized and sank off the southern coast of Greece – one of many worst such disasters this 12 months.
The Greek coastguard stated in a press release on Wednesday the vessel sank in worldwide waters, 47 nautical miles (87km) southwest of Pylos, off the Peloponnese coast. The spot is near one of many deepest areas of the Mediterranean.
The accident prompted an intensive rescue operation difficult by sturdy winds, the coastguard stated, including about 100 folks had been rescued to this point. Six coastguard vessels, a navy frigate, a navy transport and an air power helicopter, in addition to a number of non-public vessels, had been participating within the seek for these lacking – a rescue operation set to proceed in a single day.
